Above, 86 year old Johanna Quaas demonstrates the benefits of exercise as you age.

For elderly adults, a strength training program is as effective as an aerobic training program for improving functional fitness and mobility.

Physical activity in this age group improves mood and vigour, preventing depression, fatigue, and confusion.

Stressful experiences, depression, and anxiety can increase the production of inflammatory cytokines, which are linked to various health problems such as cardiovascular disease.

However research from the Ohio State University College of Medicine has shown that supplementing your diet with omega-3 capsules can decrease production of inflammatory cytokines, and reduce symptoms of anxiety by 20%.

What a difference an hour makes? In a study by researchers at Carnegie Mellon University, people who reported sleeping less than 7 hours a night were ~3 times more likely to develop a cold than those sleeping 8 hours or more.
Quality, not quantity? When analyzing sleep efficiency; those who spent less than 92% of time in bed actually asleep were 5.5 times more likely to develop a cold than those spending 98% of their time asleep.

Berries and the aging brain.
Eating berries can prevent loss of motor function (balance, co-ordination) and cognitive decline (memory) with age.
They contain polyphenolics which protect cells from the damage of oxidative stress, and prevent inflammation in the brain by changing the way neurons communicate.
Shukitt-Hale et al., (2008). Berry Fruit Supplementation and the Aging Brain. Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, 56(3), 636-41.

Positive feedback for enhanced running efficiency.

Providing experienced runners with positive feedback about their movement efficiency decreased oxygen consumption compared to a control group given no feedback. Feedback reduced perception of fatigue, giving a feeling of greater ease of running.
